The Galápagos Bullhead Shark Research and Conservation Program

Understanding the ecological importance of the smallest shark species in the Galápagos is about more than publishing research papers—it is about empowering local communities. Dr. Max Hirschfeld has spent over six years leading this initiative alongside undergraduate and graduate students inspired by the archipelago’s marine life. Because research and conservation are deeply linked with education, the program actively connects local youth with their ocean neighbors.

The project is based in Puerto Velasco Ibarra on Floreana Island, the smallest town in the archipelago. With fewer than 500 residents, it offers a tranquil look at one of the most off-the-beaten-path locations in the Enchanted Islands.

In remote communities like Floreana, conservation requires both ecological insight and social commitment. True progress happens when conservation delivers engaging, hands-on educational activities to younger generations, bridging knowledge gaps about the surrounding marine ecosystem.
